Read and Remix #10: Viral Marketing

This Wikipedia article discussed the history and evolution of viral marketing, and how this means of spreading news or information has infiltrated our lives without our direct notice. Viral media depends on the reliance on technology of the modern American, and incorporated unique, interactive, or trendy practices to spread a message of the creator’s choosing. The underlying principles of viral marketing are directly similar to the intended goals of our third project: create three new genres and circulate them to or within your community. The Wikipedia page does give specific examples of means of circulation, such as through social media, advertisements, or interactive games. However, it does go on to say that any variation of conveying a message is an acceptable means of viral marketing, which is what we are encouraged to do for our third project. I also thought it was interesting to note that there tends to be a focus on current trends and unique ways of conveying your message for it to have a greater, more appealing effect as it circulates. This further emphasizes our last blog discussion where we noted past students who used modern trends, such as snapchat filters or Kahoot! games to convey their message. So long as an audience is reached and an accurate message is conveyed, there are endless possibilities for genres we can create for our third and final project.
