My rush experience

DNZ's rush is nothing like I expected, in a good way. It began on Monday night, ended on Friday, and never lasted more than 2 hours. Monday was a basic, introductions night. Every sister introduced themselves, explained why they rushed DNZ, and then all of the PNMs (potential new members, aka me) introduced themselves and said why we decided to rush. After that, Rush Chair, Catie O'Connor, explained more about what DNZ stands for and what to expect if you eventually become a sister.

Tuesday night was a more interactive night. We were separated into groups, consisting of about 8 PNMs and 3 sisters. Within the groups, we did group charades, shared about our Hurricane Irma experience, and completed another activity involving balloons tied to our ankles. We ended the night by rotating groups so we could get to know more sisters.

Wednesday night was another interactive night. The first half of the night, our VP of Community Activities gave a speech about the philanthropies DNZ is involved in, mainly the Companion Animal Rescue Endeavor, and a few other annual events we partake in. We finished the night by sharing our preferences, such as chocolate/vanilla, Disney/Pixar, beach/mountains, and so on. The sisters worked extremely hard to make sure every PNM was included and got a chance to speak with one another.

Thursday night was interview night, which with my anxiety, was by far the most stressful. The interview, however, only lasted about 15 minutes, with the hardest question being "why do you want to be a sister?" The question wasn't necessarily hard, but hard to articulate an answer besides "you guys seems really nice and great and I've never made any true friends."

Friday night was Bid Night! We were picked up at our dorm, given a shirt, and taken to a place called the Dogwood House. There, we ate pizza, had a bonfire, and celebrated being in DNZ with all of the other sisters who were just as excited to meet us as we were them.

Knowing how my rush experience compared with other girls in traditional sororities, I am so grateful for DNZ. From the beginning, they welcomed me and made sure that the focus was on my connection with the sorority. I was beyond ecstatic to receive a bid from such a wonderful organization, and could not wait for the next steps in becoming a sister.
